About Us

WHO We Are?

Medical Clinical Officers Professionals-Uganda (MCOP-U) is an association of health professionals (independent profession) that have background training in Clinical Medicine and Community Health. It’s fully registered and legally recognized under the companies Act No.01 of 2012, under the Allied Health Professionals Council (Act Cap. 268) Section 54, (2, subsection 1) to the Uganda Allied Health Professional Association.

Medical Clinical Officer(s) (11750 registered professionals) fall under an independent profession that has, and continue to play a critical role in Uganda’s health sector. According to the National Health Facilities Master list/directory (MOH, 2018), besides MCOs who are working in Regional & National Referral Hospitals, Over 2,645MCOs are working under the Local Government health facilities (HCIII to DHO level) and are running over 1,569 HCIIIs while over 511 MCOs are running Private Not For Profit (PNFP) & community based health facilities and serving mostly over 83% rural communities of the Country’s total population. Furthermore, MCOs own supervise and/or run majority of over 1,578 private clinics throughout the country.

Medical Clinical Officers are also known for supporting most of the key health programs that have become successful in Uganda. These programs include among others; Malaria control, HIV/AIDS prevention and control, Safe male circumcision (SMC), Tuberculosis &Leprosy control, Adolescent Sexual & Reproductive Health among others. The Medical Clinical officers have been at the forefront during several epidemics including but not limited to cholera, Ebola, Marburg and the current COVID- 19 pandemic.
